The time is quickly approaching to begin practicing as a band. This is very exciting as well as a bit intimidating. Why? I am new to the musical game, have extremely high expectations of my own performance in any realm of my life and recognize that I am currently not good!
I take heart in knowing that on day 1, I was not even able to place my fingers on the correct strings – who knew your hand can really contort in that way? All I can do is practice, which I’m committed to do.
Forming and norming as we become ‘the band’ is going to be awesome! Learning is the heart of our corporate values, and I’m confident all of us will work hard to do the best we can. I believe the collective team will help uplift us as a whole – better than the individual parts – and I’m optimistic those that are stronger, have prior musical experience or just pick it up quicker will offer help to those that may struggle. Actively Help is another corporate value that is engrained in our culture. I know ‘the band’ – Sky High – will not disappoint.
If in the slim chance there are those that don’t practice, work hard, and do not Take Responsibility for their commitment to the team, I’m sure direct yet constructive feedback will be provided. Yes – other aspects of ShoreTel’s culture: Take Responsibility (being accountable) and Be Honest. Tough love will shine through if needed.
Our band will rock, and we will have fun! It will also be an amazing learning experience that propels us all to the place of newness and remind us what it’s like to be totally green and non-expert. I truly believe this will make us stronger and more empathetic in our day jobs as we continue to recruit, hire and on-board new employees who may not know “how to place their fingers in the correct places” and it feels really awkward at first. I believe it’s important to always be humble, no matter how expert one becomes. This will be a great growth experience!
