It’s interesting hearing people’s reactions when I’ve shared about ShoreTel’s Battle of the Bands program and that I’m the guitarist for the band Sky High.
Classic response from my 19 year old daughter: “OMG – you’re going through a mid-life crisis! Mom, what are you thinking?”
My 17 year old son was more supportive with a “That’s pretty cool” statement that my company supports this learning initiative. My practicing has gotten to him, though, and recently one evening he came downstairs and asked “Can’t you play another song?” I chuckled and said, “Honestly, no, not at this point.” He kind of shook his head and then added, “You’re getting better, though” before he headed back upstairs. Words to keep me going!
Reactions from friends and others I’ve shared with are similar as I’ve explained one of ShoreTel’s core values is Learn and this program was inspired by the Art of Learning and the criticality of practice to ultimately become Expert. Overwhelmingly, people are extremely impressed that a company would invest time and resources into a program that is separate from the business. They understand the investment as learning is a transferable skill and all the insights that come from learning to play a new instrument can be transferred to the work environment.
Another common reaction is, “What a great place to work!” It’s amazing the power this program has in differentiating ShoreTel from other companies and standing out as an innovative, employee centric workplace focused on team work, fun and personal and professional growth.
I may be driving my family a little nuts as I practice as much as I can at all hours as I balance all my other responsibilities. But I also know my kids are taking notice of the dedication, commitment and journey of the learning process. I truly believe they will be stronger for my going through this as I didn’t quit when at first I couldn’t even play one note! When things are hard, you push through. Period!
I’m very grateful ShoreTel is committed to its employees and cultivating a culture of excellence including programs such as the Battle of the Bands.
