Buzzword Soup: BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
As part of our continuing series “Buzzword Soup,” every so often we explore a popular term in the cloud and communications industries. Because many terms are used loosely by vendors, analysts and commentators, we find it helpful to draft simple English, non-technical explanations for words and phrases that might otherwise be confusing or misunderstood. This week, we explore “BYOD.”
What is it?
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) refers to the new trend of employees using personally-owned devices like as smartphones, laptops and PDAs for work purposes. It is one result of what is referred to as “the consumerization of IT,” the idea that user preference, not company IT departments, drives the adoption of devices and even software in the enterprise.
How is it used?
Today, people expect to use personal mobile devices at work. Further, they want to select their own devices with little or no input from corporate IT. Many corporations initially resisted this trend because of security, management and control concerns. However, it is becoming more and more difficult to fight and companies are allowing employees to use their own mobile devices, but implementing a BYOD security policy that helps manage the devises while making sure that network security is maintained.
People are not only using their personal devices at work, but they are increasingly using them to work when they are not in the office. As remote and mobile work continues to increase, the use of employee-owned smartphones and tablets will accelerate even faster.
