Cloud computing is one of the most transformative technologies since the explosion of the internet, and businesses have identified the solution as essential to their operations. A recent survey of 100 attendees at the Cloud Computing Expo in New York by an enterprise cloud storage vendor found that 73 percent of respondents said their organizations have implemented the cloud in some way. Nearly 30 percent said they have been working with the cloud for three or more years.
The cloud is also seen as essential for businesses because of its storage and backup capabilities. The firm found that 72 percent of respondents believe they can access mission-critical data in less than 24 hours by using the cloud, compared to 62 percent who answered this way regarding on-site solutions.
Forty percent of participants said they believe off-site data protection via the cloud is a valuable resource, while 37 percent said the technology offers easier access to backup and archives and 35 percent praised the cloud for its affordability.
Cloud, other technologies embody ROI
The cloud is not only affordable for organizations of all sizes, but the technology's return on investment is not drawn out, either. A recent survey of more than 6,100 IT professionals by IT staffing firm TEKsystems and the Loyalty Research Group found that 55 percent of respondents believe the cloud's ROI takes less than a year. More than 50 percent said unified communications, which also benefits from cloud deployments, returns value in this time frame.
The survey said nearly 60 percent of IT professionals believe unified communications' ROI approaches $2 million, while 57 percent answered this way regarding the cloud.
While these numbers are certainly attractive for many businesses, companies have to ensure certain IT deployments fit their overall goals. Two-thirds of IT professionals said the solutions included in the study have been successful, and more than 50 percent said the projects have aligned with their organizations.
"Common measurements of IT like cost savings, internal client satisfaction and productivity changes are important. But when a key objective of IT departments is to align with the business, showing how IT actually helps revenues increase and the business to adopt new changes is just as important," noted TEKsystems director Rachel Russell.
