There is nothing modern about the $180 Billion industry that is auto insurance, that is until you meet Adam Lyons and Joshua Dziabiak of The Zebra.
“For being that huge you would think it would be up with the times but it’ s not. And so for us realizing people want things fast living in a modern world it was very important to create a tool for folks to compare insurance. So that’s what we’ve built,”
The Zebra is a real time online auto insurance comparison platform that allows both low and high risk drivers across the country to find the best insurance rates. In less than a minute, consumers can find an auto insurance policy that fits their individualized needs. After users are prompted to answer a few questions that indicate their risk factor, The Zebra then compares more than 200 top auto insurance carriers and recommends the best deals for the user.
“We are taking the agency model and automating everything from price shopping, to looking for the best features for carriers, to finding the best deal, we’re putting it all on one platform, streamlining it and making it a lot easier for consumers,” said
It’s a new concept, says CEO Adam Lyons, one that grew out of frustration when he was trying to buy insurance himself.
“When you go to different carrier websites and they have you filling out 50 to 100 different forms and going to sites that say they’ll give you a comparison and then getting nothing, It’s just getting your email flooded so that’s really where it came from,” said Lyons.
That’s when Josh and Adam got to work creating The Zebra in 2012. But creating an insurance comparison platform was a lot easier said than done.
“We had to pull data from all these different sources to create the ultimate comparison platform,” said
“It’s a big problem and it’s the reason it hasn’t been done before,” said
It’s what attracted some big name investors including Mark Cuban, Mike Maples, Jr, and Silverton Partners in Austin.
“The second folks got a chance to use it, it was very clear and the market responded that way just from the little prototype we had built , and so that’s how we started to get initial traction. It was word of mouth, and people really liking the product,” said
Especially investors. Simon Nixon, One of the UK’s top tech entrepreneurs has now also joined the group. The Zebra has raised an additional $3 Million to complete its seed financing round bringing the company total to $4.5 Million.
So what’s next for the Zebra?
Josh says with site traffic doubling each month, it’s time to go mobile.
“If they are at a dealership and shopping for a new car and they want to know how that new vehicle is going to affect their insurance rate, we want to give them the tools to be able to do that and on the fly so we’re going to be putting a lot of emphasis on mobile over the next few months.”
