Business has changed a great deal in the last two decades. Paper documents have been replaced with digital versions that may never see a printer. We create and share documents with countless people who make decisions about how these documents will be treated.
But with every digital document, there is an inherent risk that comes with it: the ability for someone to edit, modify, share or use it without permission. docTrackr is a cutting edge document control software company whose mission is to help businesses keep their documents safe and under control, no matter where they’re stored regardless of who they are shared with.
Clement Cazalot, docTrackr’s CEO & Co-founder gave me an inside look into his company, and the business of document security.
Tell me a little about your company, docTrackr.
docTrackr is a document security software company. Our SaaS-based software enables customers to maintain complete control over their documents. We offer the ability to track, secure and manage documents after they’ve been shared.
For example, I can send you a presentation to give you background information for an article you are writing. Once I share it, I can track to see how many times you opened it, shared it or tried to make edits to it. I can even revoke permission on that presentation.
What makes docTrackr different from other companies in the market?
docTrackr not only provides stand alone document security, but integrates with other cloud platforms, like Box, SharePoint, Gmail or Dropbox, so files can be secured when they leave your network or public cloud.
We partner with Adobe and Microsoft, giving our customers access to the documents they use every day. With docTrackr, you get security without a workflow interruption.
docTrackr also provides more than just security. We don’t just let you secure your PDFs and MS Office documents, we also provide usage data, permissions management and document tracking that helps keep your documents secure.
Describe your typical customer.
We work with companies of all sizes, from large enterprises who need to secure thousands of documents, to small businesses with just a few important pieces of information. Many of the business we work with aren’t looking for expensive, time consuming implementations and prefer something more lightweight that integrates with the software they’re already using.
What has changed in the past 5 years in how you do business and how docTrackr employees work?
With French, German and Romanian founders, docTrackr has always been an international company, and has always relied on technology to maintain team cohesion. As our team has grown, we have never hesitated to hire the best talent, regardless where they might be located.
Our employees hail from Romania, Argentina, France, Germany and the US. We use technology like Skype and Google Hangouts often, and meet in an exotic location twice a year to work as a team.
It’s a different way of doing business but it gives us an edge. Someone is always working on docTrackr.
Has anything changed about your customers’ expectations?
Our customers are increasingly asking for customized security. Many of our customers have unique security situations that require custom development work. We’ve recently released our API to put the power of security in the hands of these customers, allowing them to create tailored security solutions that fit their unique needs.
Have you faced any difficulties transitioning into this demanding industry?
Securing documents in all possible situations is a big challenge. docTrackr goes where security traditionally hasn’t been. With our API, and the upcoming release of our Gmail plugin that secures email attachments we hope to bring security to a wider audience.
There have been secure email services in the past, but the government pressured them to shut down; think Edward Snowden. People are more cautious about security, particularly email security, than ever. docTrackr allows individuals and businesses to secure, track and manage email attachments, preventing unauthorized access by anyone.
How does your company use social media?
Social media has been a great way for us to reach out to big names and thought leaders in the security industry. We also connect with the security community, starting discussions and writing articles we think are relevant.
What else should people know about docTrackr?
Our culture, product and strategy are unique. Unlike our competitors, we choose not to fight a head-on battle with established companies. Instead, we partner and integrate with them.
These companies partner with us because they realize we’ve already developed a very powerful technology. They can wrap their technology in our solution, achieve powerful security and get back to doing what they do best.
