The unified communications market is expected to undergo significant growth as more businesses realize the advantages of the technology. Independent research firm COMMfusion recently announced results of its Unified Communications & Collaboration Market (UCC) 2011-2016 report, suggesting that the industry is forecast to expand through this time frame.
In 2012, the global UC-capable market is projected to increase 8 percent from 2011, reaching more than $12.2 billion. By 2016, this figure is expected to approach nearly $21 billion. The research firm explained that much of this growth is from the popularity of mobility and video communication solutions.
"Trends such as the consumerization of IT, Bring Your Own Device, and virtualization are helping to propel the UCC market, with hosted services providing the next big opportunity for UCC," COMMfusion explained.
A survey conducted by Info-Tech Research Group also found that BYOD is expected to be key for companies' use of unified communications. The study said that 35 percent of employees will be using mobile devices for work-related tasks by mid-2013. Of the organizations polled by the firm, 89 percent said they currently support BYOD for staff member email.
